A Vintage Find :: General Store Display Bins

Happy Autumn to all of you!

I found a wonderful piece of furniture last month while out yard saling.

It is a General Store fixture display vending organizer bins thingy.
It's 6' high by 3' wide by 1' deep.
It consists of a top piece and bottom piece,
and whereas the top 12 bins are part of the cabinet,
the bottom 9 bins are removable.

And I am torn as to whether or not I should keep it or sell it.
Sigh.
I bought it because, well, it's just plain cool.

I got it home, cleaned it up, and have ever since been trying to think of where to use it.
Somewhere. Somehow.

We simplified so thoroughly that whatever goes in here has to be actually used,
and not just stored to be pretty (well it could be both).

Any and all ideas are welcome!
(And never mind the blue paint that doesn't come all the way to the baseboards--
I didn't cut in because I was seeing if I actually like this color for our office- I don't.
Carry on...)

Can you help me decide to keep these or talk me into selling this to you?

Thank you so much for your help!

  3. It it SO cool!! I think I would use it in my pantry if I had to store things in it that were in use... Or if you wanted it out for people to see maybe for books and supplies in the office.

  4. OMG ummm that is ugly....just plain ugly...and ummm I can't think of a thing you could use it for...so I'll do ya a favor and take it off your hands...and ummmm won't even charge ya a thing to haul it off. .
ok...not really...I agree you have yourself a dilemma there! I wouldn't want to sell it either...and yet what to use it for? The only thing I can think of is a pantry. Cute apothecary type containers...some cooking items...I think it could be made to look adorable and still be usefull! It's hard to tell the exact dimensions though from the picture. Good luck, and I'll be watching to see what you do with it.

  6. That is a FABULOUS piece Leslie!! I think I would do a mix of things in it...maybe linens like suggested above and crafts and books, plates, etc?? Is it possible to separate the two pieces and have the small one hanging on a wall somewhere or even above the larger piece that way it would break it up a bit?

Can't wait to see what you do with it!

    1. Vanessa - that is what I was thinking too! I was wondering if you would break it up and hang the top piece. Maybe even use it in a different room???
The bottom would be great for linens and hang the top in the bathroom (if you have a wall big enough) for the lotions, etc. or even towels????
Or, do you have an entry way that you could use the bottom for shoes and the top for scarves, mittens, hats, etc???
I can't wait to see what you decide to do either, Leslie!
      Hugs!

  7. I guess it depends on which room you want to use it in. Office supplies, books & magazines, linens (great comment above--whether sheets, table linens, or towels), bathroom goodies (towels, soaps, lotions), wrapping stuff (bags, ribbon, etc.), & craft materials are things that came to mind.

  8. I like the idea of linens, however when I first saw it I thought fruit and veggies belonged in it!

  9. would be nice in a mudroom, for mitts, hats, etc., maybe even some shoes in the lowers? Looks like there is a space to label each section... either for items or people. I love the ideas above too!

  10. I see it as craft storage, bathroom storage or kitchen storage. I could also see it in an entryway for gloves, scarves, etc. It's a very cool item that I think I'd have a hard time selling. ooh, Ooh, it would also be cool for seed packets, some terra cotta planters, and a bunch of gardening things.

  11. These are amazing. Could fill them with so many things. Storing my spices. Canned goods. Extra pantry space. Craft items. Recipe books. I would love to have these.

  12. I don't know if you sew, but I can envision neatly folded colorful fabrics on display and other pretty craft items. Also you could add in some folded wrapping paper, bows and such. Any type of craft items. you could get little baskets to fit in the bins and fill them with all manner of things.

  13. I sell essential oils--would display them in it along with storage for books/papers etc. I could use it for my crafts for storage by my nesting chair...x-stitch, crochet, etc. along with my magazines/books.

  14. I would love for you to sell it, but that is purely selfish. If it was me, I'd keep it!! The things you could do with it is endless. Can't wait to see what you decide.

  17. I love it. Could use it in kitchen to store containers of baking goods - you have all purpose flour in one container in a bin, self-rising flour in another, etc., could use in laundry room for supply storage, could use in quilt room to store quilt projects, could use in garage to store extra supplies. So many options. So few pieces.

  19. Sweet! Love it! I could just a bunch of things with it in my craft room. Now that I closed my scrap store I'm looking for super cute pieces to put in my crop room so that gals can come play. What an awesome piece this would be. I totally think it should be sold so it can come to live in my crop room. :)

  23. Awwwwwww, what a super cute and extremely well organized idea for storage. I love it it's so coherent in decor style; all the vintage and other elements tie everything together just perfectly. I found this is better way to store as much thinks and create extra space in home. WELL DONE! :)
