The Humble Paint Chip

Ah, the simple paint chip.
Small, unassuming, yet colorful.
Who knew it could be so versatile?
Who knew it could be used for something other than selecting a wall color?

These thin, disposable cards are now inspiring new creations.
And as a paint lover myself, I couldn't be more thrilled!

After a thorough-ish search around Google-land and Pinterest,
I have a new respect for this oft-taped-to-the-wall,
tossed-in-a-drawer decorating and re-decorating staple.

Aren't these some neat ideas?

Utensil/napkin holder.

EEEEK! Earrings!

My cheapskate heart loves this one.
This is a knock-off of Ballard Designs' Warmth Abstract Print.
Ballard's price? $279.00!
Paint chip price? Under $10.00!

Sugar Cookies?

"Have a drink, darling."
"Have a darling drink."

Baby Announcement.

And decorations for a celebration.

Color-of-the-day dry-erase calendar.

Slide paint chip squares under a table's protective glass.

Wall Collage.
Simple. Interesting. Colorful.
(Use poster putty to hold chips in place.)

Let 'em know you've relocated with these adorable address cards.

Present your gift.
Add paint chips to your gift wrapping stockpile.

Place cards for a shower, or a housewarming dinner, or oh, just about ANY celebration!

Do you have an ugly, old, flat clock?
It's time to refresh it!

This is simply lovely.
Garland for the tree.
If I get started now, I may have a strand finished just in time for Christmas!

Choose your gradient colors from a paint chip card, buy samples of each color,
and paint those drawers!

How fun are these?

And finally, one of my favorite games: a scavenger hunt.
Find items during your hunt that match the colorways on the swatches!

So, next time, when you open your drawer,
the one in which you've stuffed all your paint chip samples,
remember that those humble paint chips can be a source of free decor inspiration.
What's in your drawer?

  1. Oooh...what great ideas! I have recently fallen in love with Pinterest. There are so many creative people out there...including you, my friend. Blessings to you! And supersize (((hugs)))

  2. I love them ! Especially the gift tags. Such great ideas.

  3. Such great ideas, Leslie! And to think I purse my lips every time I have to move my samples out of the way {cases, fan decks, not to mention the larger size samples I order to tape on the wall}! I think my favorites are the dresser and the pinwheel artwork.

  4. Such wonderful ideas! My favorite two are the clock and the dresser with the different shades. What a great thing to do when you just can't choose, too.

  5. These are so pretty but where do you get the paint chips? I can't help but think of my locally owned paint stores being wiped out of paint chips for crafts & no one buying paint. The cost goes somewhere, if not to the store owner then the price of the paint goes up to cover it?

    1. Hi! I am not suggesting running out and taking all the paint chips everywhere :) Just using up the ones you have in your stash. As for me, I always ask if I am taking quite a few (which I do if I am gathering a selection for a client), and have never been told that I can't take them. In fact, I am encouraged to take as many as I want. I suggest asking the person in charge of the paint if you will be taking an extraordinary amount of chips.

  6. Love the $10 abstract art!!!
My 5yo daughter keeps asking for her room to be "painted like a rainbow"...this might just help me accomplish that without actually painting the walls!!

  7. I love the dresser. Of course that could be because there is a giant "B" above it. Lol. The mosaic table is really cool too. :-)

  8. Wow, love all of these wonderful ideas! I think I might need to go get some paint chips soon! xxx

  9. That is very creative and I do think the dresser was my favorite, the palette of colors were very cute.
I am not creative enough to think of this stuff on my own. is amazing.

  10. So many cute ideas! My friend did a painting themed bday party for her son and used paint chips as cupcake toppers. It was so neat! Thanks for the great inspiration Leslie! :-)

  11. What a fun post of ideas! Love this!

  12. Those are some really cute ideas!

  13. I love the paint chip fact I just pinned the clock! I keep paint chips to match to clothing items so that if I need an accessory or shirt or what have you I can match the color and stick the chip in my purse to carry to match! I have been visiting you often and have you listed on my blogroll at my new site Hope you stop by!

  14. I am sharing this with a friend of mine to bought a box of them at an auction of a hardware store going out of business. She bought a huge box for a quarter, thinking of some sort of craft.....

  15. My favorite is the we've moved because it makes sense! :):)

  16. Oh, so many wonderful ideas!
I really like that dresser/nightstand with the paint chip inspiration.

  17. Love these ideas!! Most places have samples for free, so I'll definitely be using some of your ideas!

  18. I’m not that much of a internet reader to be honest but your sites really nice, keep it up!
